AfDB injects €270 million to upgrade Moroccan airports

This update focuses on AfDB Morocco airport financing. Morocco has taken a new step in modernising its airports with major African financial backing, a signal closely watched by investors and Moroccans living abroad.

AfDB Morocco airport financing deal signed in Casablanca

Morocco and the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group have signed in Casablanca a €270 million financing agreement. The loan will fund the Airport Infrastructure Extension and Modernisation Programme (PEMIA).

The ceremony brought together AfDB Group President Sidi Ould Tah, on an official visit to Morocco, and Economy and Finance Minister Nadia Fettah. The agreement was signed by AfDB Country Office Manager in Morocco, Achraf Tarsim, and the Director General of the National Airports Office (ONDA), Adel El Fakir. Tamwilcom Director General, Saïd Jabrani, also attended.

Key airports upgraded ahead of major events

According to the AfDB, this financing granted to ONDA is intended to increase and modernise Morocco’s airport capacity. Investments will focus on strategic platforms such as Marrakech, Agadir, Fez and Tangier.

These cities handle a large share of tourist arrivals and trips home by Moroccans abroad. Larger and more modern terminals are expected to improve passenger flows, security checks and peak-season management.

The Bank also stresses that this operation supports Morocco’s preparations for major international events, in line with the country’s tourism vision for 2030. For Moroccans living abroad who travel regularly, stronger capacity could help reduce congestion during the summer and end-of-year holidays.

A lever for Morocco’s air transport competitiveness

The Airport Infrastructure Extension and Modernisation Programme aims to strengthen the long-term competitiveness of Morocco’s air transport sector. The goal is not only to increase operational capacity at major airports, but also to improve safety standards, energy efficiency and service quality.

For investors and entrepreneurs in the Moroccan diaspora, AfDB Morocco airport financing sends a reassuring signal. A modern and reliable airport network is a key factor to:

  • facilitate business travel to major Moroccan cities;
  • support the growth of tourism and short-term rentals;
  • boost the appeal of hotel and real estate projects;
  • better connect inland regions to international hubs.

A project anchored in a broader African strategy

This AfDB Morocco airport financing operation is part of a continental dynamic led by the Bank through the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme in Africa (IATP). The programme aims to help African states modernise, finance and integrate their air transport systems.

The ambition is to build a safer, more competitive, more sustainable and better-connected aviation sector across the continent. Within this framework, Morocco is consolidating its role as a hub between Europe, Africa and, for many Moroccans abroad, their countries of residence.

For the Moroccan community worldwide, the concrete impact of this deal will be seen over the coming years: new capacity, smoother handling of summer traffic, and potentially more routes or higher frequencies to major European and North American cities.

While operational implementation will take time, the €270 million financing already confirms a clear direction: placing airport infrastructure at the centre of Morocco’s strategy for development and international outreach.
