In Rabat, Abdellah El Bahmidi’s “Hidden/Hiding” reveals what cities choose to hide

This update focuses on Rabat Hidden Hiding exhibition. The Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans living abroad will host in Rabat “Hidden/Hiding”, a photography exhibition by Vienna-based Moroccan artist Abdellah El Bahmidi.

Rabat Hidden Hiding exhibition: dates and venue

The exhibition “Hidden/Hiding” will run from 15 October to 12 November 2026.

It will be shown at the Difaf gallery, inside the Foundation’s headquarters in Rabat.

The opening is scheduled for 15 October from 6:30 p.m., with the artist in attendance.

For Moroccans living abroad who return to the country in autumn, this one-month Rabat Hidden Hiding exhibition offers a concrete opportunity to experience a Moroccan perspective on urban space, right in the capital.

Black-and-white images on appearance and disappearance

Through a series of black-and-white photographs, Abdellah El Bahmidi explores the city as a space of tension between the visible and the invisible.

The title “Hidden/Hiding” refers to two related but distinct notions: what is concealed and the act of hiding.

The images invite visitors to question what photography decides to show, and what it keeps in the dark.

The artistic approach plays with the boundary between presence and absence, traces and erasure, architecture and moving bodies.

A life path between Morocco, Europe and Austria

Born in Azrou in 1946, Abdellah El Bahmidi spent his early years between several Moroccan cities and regions, including Errachidia, Azrou and Aït Hdidou, before a period in Paris.

He later settled in Vienna, Austria, where he has been living for sixteen years.

A trained clinical psychologist, he headed child protection institutions from 1976 to 2010.

At the same time, he has nurtured a passion for photography since 1970.

A keen long-distance cyclist, he has ridden from Vienna to Tangier, Salzburg to Rome, Vienna to the Black Sea, and on several routes between Vienna and France.

His clinical work, his experience of migration and his long journeys inform his attention to everyday details, urban margins and fleeting silhouettes.

A space dedicated to Moroccan creators abroad

For the Hassan II Foundation, this exhibition is part of a broader programme aimed at maintaining and strengthening ties between Moroccans living abroad and their country of origin.

Through “Hidden/Hiding”, the institution highlights the journey of an artist who left the Middle Atlas, passed through Paris and is now based in Vienna.

The Difaf gallery positions itself as a venue dedicated to showcasing the artistic work of Moroccans abroad and fostering cultural dialogue.

The Foundation underlines that art and culture help transmit shared values, knowledge and heritage.

For Moroccans returning for a short stay in Rabat, this space also offers a clear cultural meeting point within an institution that explicitly addresses them.

A cultural stop during visits back home

For Moroccans based in Europe, North America or the Gulf who are planning a trip to Morocco between mid-October and mid-November 2026, the show can be easily added to a visit programme in the capital.

Located at the Hassan II Foundation headquarters, the gallery can be a cultural break between administrative procedures and family gatherings.

This Rabat Hidden Hiding exhibition also illustrates the intention to give greater visibility in Morocco to the work of Moroccan artists based abroad, reconnecting them with a local audience.
