The Casablanca Stock Exchange closed sharply higher, a move that Moroccans managing their money from abroad should keep a close eye on.
Casablanca Stock Exchange indices move back into positive territory
At Monday’s close, the main index of the Casablanca Stock Exchange, the MASI, gained 2.27% to reach 17,991.02 points. This reflects a broadly positive session on the equity market.
The MASI 20, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks on the Casablanca market, advanced by 2.44% to 1,313.64 points. The MASI ESG index, focused on companies with the highest environmental, social and governance ratings, climbed 2.34% to 1,338.4 points.
Small and mid caps also benefited from the uptick. The MASI Mid and Small Cap index rose by 2.13% to stand at 1,710.12 points. For Moroccans living abroad who hold portfolios through banks in Morocco, these moves can affect the value of their assets and their timing for entering the market.
Sectors driving the market higher
Several sectors supported the rebound on the Casablanca Stock Exchange. The “Agricultural industry” index led the way with a 5.19% rise. “Building and construction materials” added 3.89%, while “Engineering and industrial equipment” gained 3.86%.
These moves are especially relevant for Moroccans abroad who want to back the real Moroccan economy through the stock market: agri-food, construction and industrial equipment are closely linked to domestic demand and major infrastructure projects.
Other areas, however, remained under pressure. “Forestry and paper” fell by 1.25%, “Real estate investment companies” by 1.04% and “Oil and gas” by 0.61%. For investors already exposed to these segments, the session weighed on short-term performance.
Trading volumes, key stocks and signals for the diaspora
Total turnover came in at around 196 million dirhams, mainly on the central “Equities” market. Three stocks dominated trading: BCP with 115.66 million dirhams, Managem with 14.07 million dirhams and SGTM with 10.28 million dirhams.
Overall market capitalisation now stands above 1,058.4 billion dirhams. This level confirms the role of the this case as the main platform for Moroccans who want to diversify their savings in Morocco beyond property or standard bank deposits.
On the winners’ side, several names stood out:
- Minière Touissit: +10% at 2,949 MAD
- Lesieur Cristal: +6.14% at 307.9 MAD
- Maroc Leasing: +5.99% at 374.15 MAD
- Sonasid: +5.44% at 1,898 MAD
- Mutandis: +5.43% at 233 MAD
On the downside, the steepest drops hit:
- Cartier Saada: -9.95% at 18.01 MAD
- Agma: -5.51% at 6,690 MAD
- Maghrebail: -3.56% at 890.1 MAD
- Sanlam Maroc: -3.02% at 3,055 MAD
- Afriquia Gaz: -1.62% at 3,640 MAD
What this means for Moroccans investing from abroad
For Moroccans living abroad who are preparing a future return, funding a project or building savings in dirhams, this strong session highlights both the volatility and the potential of the Casablanca market.
Such a rebound should not be read as a guarantee of a lasting upward trend, but as one signal among others for long-term strategies. Before increasing their exposure to equities, overseas investors would be wise to:
- review the balance between equities, cash and other assets,
- check fees and conditions with their bank in Morocco,
- monitor MASI and MASI 20 on a regular basis,
- align market information with their plans to return or transfer savings.
Monday’s trend is therefore one piece of the puzzle for Moroccans abroad who want a coherent investment strategy linked to their long-term plans in Morocco.
