Casablanca Stock Exchange ends the week on a positive note

The Casablanca Stock Exchange closed Friday’s session in positive territory, offering a fresh signal of resilience to investors who follow Moroccan assets from abroad.

Casablanca Stock Exchange indices move higher

The main benchmark of the Casablanca Stock Exchange, the MASI, rose by 0.44% to 18,792.25 points. This upward move confirms a modest rebound after several more volatile sessions.

The MASI 20, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks, posted a stronger gain of 0.73% to 1,362.59 points. The MASI ESG index, focused on companies with the best environmental, social and governance ratings, inched up by 0.05% to 1,393.01 points.

Mid and small caps also contributed to the positive tone. The MASI Mid and Small Cap gained 0.26% to reach 1,805.32 points, a sign that interest is not limited to blue chips on the Moroccan market.

Insurance and banks lead, pharma under pressure

At sector level, three segments clearly stood out. The “Insurance” index jumped by 6.17%, highlighting strong demand for this key long-term savings sector in Morocco. “Building and construction materials” advanced by 1.61%, while “Banks” gained 1.07%.

For Moroccans living abroad who monitor the solidity of Moroccan banks and insurers before allocating their savings between cash, life insurance, property or equities, these sector moves are closely watched.

On the downside, several sectors faced sharp corrections. “Pharmaceutical industry” dropped by 9.23%, “Beverages” by 4.22% and “Chemicals” by 2.59%, registering the steepest sector declines of the day.

Active trading and most traded stocks

Turnover exceeded 306 million dirhams, mostly on the central market. Three major names concentrated a large share of activity:

  • Managem: 49.02 million dirhams traded
  • Attijariwafa bank: 36.48 million dirhams
  • Itissalat Al-Maghrib (Maroc Telecom): 32 million dirhams

The total market capitalization of the Casablanca Stock Exchange reached around 1,102 billion dirhams, underlining the size of the equity market in financing the Moroccan economy.

What this means for Moroccans investing from abroad

For Moroccans based overseas, this session underlines an important point: Casablanca remains a relatively active and diversified market, with clear sector rotations. Insurance stocks such as Wafa Assurance (+9.44% at 5,450 dirhams) and Sanlam Maroc (+4.53% at 3,000 dirhams) were among the strongest risers, along with Balima (+5.82% at 200 dirhams), Ciments du Maroc (+3.24% at 1,750 dirhams) and Jet Contractors (+3.21% at 2,059 dirhams).

On the other side, notable corrections hit several names, including Sothema (-9.81% at 340 dirhams), Disway (-8.37% at 701 dirhams), Société des Boissons du Maroc (-5.65% at 2,005 dirhams), Fenie Brossette (-4.55% at 375.1 dirhams) and Rebab Company (-3.3% at 95 dirhams).

For Moroccans abroad who are thinking about diversifying their dirham savings beyond property, these market moves are a reminder of the need to:

  • follow the MASI and MASI 20 indices regularly,
  • keep an eye on key sectors such as banking, insurance and telecoms,
  • seek advice from their bank or Moroccan brokerage firm before investing.

In that sense, the this case remains a barometer of confidence in Morocco’s economy, a useful indicator for those planning a return, a new project back home or an increase in their dirham-based investments.
