The Casablanca Stock Exchange opened in negative territory on Monday, with its main indices giving back part of last week’s gains.
Casablanca Stock Exchange starts the week in the red
At the opening bell, the benchmark MASI index slipped by 0.16 %, settling at 18,762.25 points. This move erased part of the 0.44 % rise posted on Friday.
The MASI 20 index, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks on the Casablanca Stock Exchange, fell by 0.47 % to 1,356.25 points. The MASI ESG index, composed of companies with the best environmental, social and governance scores according to Moody’s ESG Solutions, declined by 0.33 % to 1,388.39 points.
Mid and small caps move against the trend
In contrast with the broader market, the MASI Mid and Small Cap index gained 0.38 % to reach 1,812.27 points. This index reflects the performance of small and mid-sized companies listed in Casablanca.
For Moroccans living abroad who monitor their portfolios or consider investing in Morocco, this divergence underlines the importance of diversification between large caps and mid caps instead of focusing solely on the biggest names.
Biggest losers and winners on the day
Several individual shares stood out at the start of the session. The main losers included:
- Cartier Saada: -3.15 % at 23.04 MAD
- Attijariwafa bank: -1.67 % at 706 MAD
- HPS: -1.49 % at 660 MAD
- Sodep-Marsa Maroc: -1.03 % at 865 MAD
- Label’Vie: -0.94 % at 4,230 MAD
On the upside, several names recorded sharp increases:
- Disway: +8.42 % at 760 MAD
- Mutandis: +5.91 % at 250 MAD
- Involys: +4.65 % at 134.9 MAD
- Delta Holding: +4.18 % at 57.3 MAD
- Sothema: +3.25 % at 351.05 MAD
These moves highlight a selective market, where each earnings release, sector signal or growth outlook can trigger strong swings, both down and up.
What this means for Moroccans investing from abroad
For Moroccans abroad looking to strengthen their financial ties with the country, Monday’s session offers several reminders:
- MASI’s overall performance can fluctuate in the short term, even after a positive day.
- Large banking or industrial caps are not the only drivers of returns.
- Mid and small caps may offer opportunities, but with specific risks.
Before linking a return plan, property purchase or long-term savings strategy to the Casablanca Stock Exchange, it remains wise to consult a financial adviser in Morocco or your local bank there. Opening data show the trend but do not replace analysis over several months or years.
Moroccans living abroad can follow the MASI and other key indices on official Casablanca platforms, then adjust their investment decisions according to their time horizon, risk profile and long-term projects in Morocco.
