Moroccan transfers from abroad hit record level by end of August

This update focuses on Moroccan remittances abroad. Remittances sent by Moroccans living abroad have reached a new high, confirming their central role in Morocco’s economy.

Moroccan remittances abroad reach 89.22 billion dirhams

According to the latest figures from the Moroccan Foreign Exchange Office, Moroccan remittances abroad reached 89.22 billion dirhams by the end of August 2026, compared with 81.846 billion dirhams a year earlier.

This represents a 9% year-on-year increase. It shows how stable these transfers remain, whether they are used to support families, maintain property or finance a future return project.

For many Moroccans abroad, Moroccan remittances abroad are still the most direct way to keep both a financial and emotional link with home. They also weigh heavily in Morocco’s external accounts.

Travel balance: the impact of trips back home

Beyond bank transfers, trips to Morocco also generate significant inflows. The travel account surplus reached 74.621 billion dirhams by the end of August, an increase of 10.8% compared with the previous year.

This surplus stems from a 9.7% rise in travel receipts, which climbed to 97.926 billion dirhams, while travel expenditures grew more modestly by 6.6%, to 23.305 billion dirhams.

In practice, this means that stays in Morocco bring in more foreign currency than they cost. Air tickets, hotel nights, spending in local shops or renovation work during summer visits all contribute to this performance.

For families, these figures highlight that every visit back home, during summer or religious holidays, has a measurable economic impact in addition to the joy of reuniting with relatives.

Foreign investment is rising, Morocco more attractive

The Foreign Exchange Office also notes a clear improvement in foreign direct investment (FDI) flows into Morocco. Net FDI inflows jumped by 65%, reaching 34.334 billion dirhams.

FDI revenues increased by 17% to 47.318 billion dirhams, while FDI-related expenses fell by 33.9% to 12.984 billion dirhams.

This trend points to a renewed attractiveness of the country for international investors. For Moroccans abroad considering investments back home, this context can be seen as an additional sign of confidence in the national economy.

Remittances, projects and the idea of returning

Net flows of Moroccan direct investment abroad have also changed significantly. They reached a positive balance of 6.667 billion dirhams, compared with 2.358 billion dirhams a year earlier.

Taken together, these indicators confirm several trends that matter directly for Moroccans living abroad:

  • this case remain a stable source of income for families in Morocco;
  • the travel account shows the economic importance of regular visits, especially in summer;
  • the rise in FDI reflects a business environment seen as safer for investment.

For those considering a partial or permanent return, or a real-estate or business project in Morocco, these figures may influence their decisions. They are an invitation to look more closely at available schemes, such as tax agreements, foreign-exchange rules and facilities granted to investors.

Before making any major commitment, it remains advisable to check the latest data and regulations through official channels, such as the portal of the ministry in charge of Moroccans living abroad (https://www.mre.gov.ma/), and to consult specialist advisers or Moroccan banks.

this issue, travel spending and investments all reflect the same underlying reality: a long-term economic bond between families living overseas and Morocco.
