Moroccan fertilizers: Brazil is counting on Morocco to secure its supplies ahead of the 2026-2027 agricultural season. Rabat is expected to commit to delivering 3.8 million tons of phosphate fertilizers. This volume represents around 76% of the 5 million-ton shortfall estimated by the Brazilian government.
The information was reported by CNN Brasil after an interview with Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, André de Paula, who was scheduled to travel to Rabat to formalize the commitment.
Morocco could cover 76% of Brazil’s phosphate fertilizer gap
Brazil’s needs are considerable. For the 2026-2027 season, the government estimates its deficit in phosphate fertilizers at 5 million tons.
Morocco is expected to supply 3.8 million tons. This volume would cover nearly three quarters of the projected shortfall.
According to CNN Brasil, the first shipment could leave quickly. Minister André de Paula even mentioned a possible departure as early as the week following the conclusion of the agreement.
This cooperation comes at a tense moment for the global fertilizer market. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have disrupted some logistics routes and heightened concerns about international supply security.
Brazil’s heavy dependence on fertilizer imports
The significance of this agreement is also tied to Brazil’s strong dependence on foreign markets.
Around 92% of the fertilizers used in the country are imported, according to the Brazilian minister. This exposure makes the agricultural sector vulnerable to geopolitical tensions, logistical disruptions and price volatility.
The farming calendar makes the situation even more sensitive. Any delay in fertilizer deliveries can complicate crop preparation and disrupt on-farm operations.
The industry is already worried. In August, the Brazilian government recommended giving priority to fertilizer unloading in ports for six months in order to streamline operations linked to the 2026-2027 campaign.
Moroccan phosphates at the heart of bilateral cooperation
Morocco occupies a strategic position in this equation thanks to its vast phosphate reserves and its developed fertilizer industry.
For Brasília, closer ties with Rabat should help secure a significant share of the volumes needed for the upcoming season.
The Brazilian government is nevertheless trying to act on several fronts. It also aims to revive domestic fertilizer production to gradually reduce its external dependence. Three Petrobras units have already restarted operations, while a fourth facility is still in the process of being brought back online.
Growing agricultural partnership between Rabat and Brasília
André de Paula’s mission to Morocco is not limited to fertilizers. A delegation bringing together several Brazilian agricultural organizations was also expected to take part in the talks.
Brazil is seeking to strengthen its trade relations with the Kingdom against a backdrop of tensions on agricultural and commodity markets.
For Morocco, this new cooperation also confirms the growing importance of its fertilizer exports to major global farming markets.
Moroccan fertilizers could therefore play a key role in securing Brazil’s 2026-2027 agricultural season, if the announced commitment is implemented as planned.
