British authorities have declared a UK major incident in the village of Whelford, in south-west England, after an event near RAF Fairford air base led to arrests and evacuations.

On Sunday, police activated the “major incident” procedure in the Whelford area, a village located close to RAF Fairford, an air base used by the US military.
Officers said that “a number of properties are currently being evacuated in the Whelford area following the declaration of a major incident”, in coordination with emergency services.
Residents affected by the evacuation were taken to a leisure centre set up as a temporary shelter. A safety cordon has been put in place around the area, and access is tightly controlled.
Arrests and suspected explosives offences
According to police, several men were arrested early Sunday morning following the major incident near the RAF base. They are suspected of offences under UK explosives legislation.
