The Tangier ballot fraud case has widened, with seven suspects now in custody and a judicial investigation launched to clarify what happened on election day.
Tangier ballot fraud: two additional suspects arrested
The public prosecutor at the Tangier Court of Appeal has announced the arrest of two additional suspects in a case involving the diversion and falsification of ballot papers. With these arrests, seven people are now being held in connection with the case.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the prosecutor said he had requested the opening of a judicial investigation and pre-trial detention for several of the suspects. The inquiry aims to verify alleged violations of the integrity of the vote and the falsification of ballot papers.
Accountant, employer and bags of ballot papers
According to the first elements shared by the prosecution, one of the new main suspects works as an accountant in a private company. He is suspected of stamping ballot papers with the symbol of a political party, allegedly on the orders of his employer, who is also under investigation.
The events are believed to have taken place in an apartment within a hotel residence in Tangier. The employer reportedly arrived there with two men carrying bags filled with ballot papers. All of them are suspected of taking part in the marking of the party’s symbol on those ballots.
Investigators were able to recover footage from the residence’s surveillance cameras, even though the recordings had initially been deleted. According to the prosecution, the images confirm the presence in the apartment of the employer, his accountant and two individuals already in custody, up until the moment they left the premises.
The footage also shows another suspect, accused of having withdrawn the ballot papers from a polling station and later returned them. The bags later intercepted at two polling stations are said to match those visible on the surveillance videos.
Phone analysis and an ongoing investigation
Forensic analysis of the employer’s mobile phone revealed communications with two suspects already in pre-trial detention, both in the days leading up to the vote and on election day itself. These exchanges add another layer to the reconstruction of the events.
The prosecution stresses that its request for a full judicial investigation is based on this set of preliminary findings. The stated goal is to establish each person’s level of responsibility, identify any accomplices and determine the real extent of the attempted fraud.
For Moroccans living abroad, especially those who keep close ties with Tangier and the north, the case is a reminder of how crucial electoral safeguards are back home, whether they follow politics from a distance or plan a permanent return.
Trust in institutions and the role of citizens
While the investigation is still ongoing, judicial authorities highlight several points intended to reassure citizens, both inside Morocco and in the diaspora:
- any suspicion of ballot manipulation triggers a formal investigation;
- digital evidence, including CCTV footage, now plays a central role;
- pre-trial detention is used to protect the integrity of the probe;
- criminal charges are being considered for all those involved.
For Moroccans abroad, these developments show that incidents such as the Tangier ballot fraud case are handled within a legal framework and remain localised. They do not directly affect consular procedures, investment projects or travel plans, but they do feed a broader debate on transparency and public life in Morocco.
The next steps in the case will reveal whether more people are charged and what judicial outcome awaits the seven suspects already in custody.
