Casablanca Stock Exchange closes lower as mining shares slide

The Casablanca Stock Exchange ended Tuesday’s session in negative territory, reflecting a cautious mood on Moroccan equities.

Casablanca Stock Exchange indices under pressure

The main index, the MASI, dropped 1.14% to 18,190.19 points. This decline signals broad-based weakness across several segments of the market.

The MASI 20, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks, fell 0.8% to 1,319.48 points. The MASI ESG index, focused on companies with the best environmental, social and governance scores, slipped 1.66% to 1,345.26 points.

Mid and small caps also moved lower. The MASI Mid and Small Cap index lost 0.93%, closing at 1,771.38 points.

Sectors hit hardest and pockets of resilience

On a sector level, the session was particularly harsh for several industries. The Mining index plunged 4.04%, posting the steepest sector loss of the day.

Investment and holding companies retreated 2.89%, while the Food Producers segment dropped 2.72% and Chemicals 2.41%. Together, these declines weighed heavily on the overall Casablanca Stock Exchange capitalization.

Some sectors, however, managed to post gains. Beverages advanced 1.62%, Forestry & Paper added 1.50%, and the Electricity sector inched up 0.11%.

Strong trading volumes and most active stocks

Total turnover exceeded 515.2 million dirhams, mostly on the central equity market. Three names were particularly active.

  • TGCC, with 70.57 million dirhams traded,
  • Holcim Maroc, with 52.68 million dirhams,
  • Akdital, with 51.63 million dirhams.

Overall market capitalization stood at around 1,066.1 billion dirhams, underlining the role of the Casablanca Stock Exchange as a key investment hub for Moroccans, including those living abroad who manage portfolios remotely.

Biggest losers and selective gainers

At the individual stock level, several counters recorded sharp corrections. Zellidja plunged 8.85% to 278 dirhams, while Rebab Company fell 6.00% to 97.62 dirhams.

Managem lost 4.71% to 1,620 dirhams, Fenie Brossette dropped 3.9% to 345 dirhams, and Jet Contractors slid 3.72% to 1,943 dirhams. These moves highlight strong pressure on industrial and mining shares.

On the upside, a few stocks stood out. Société des Boissons du Maroc gained 1.83% to 2,109 dirhams, matching Maghreb Oxygène’s 1.83% rise to 383 dirhams. Med Paper climbed 1.5% to 24.98 dirhams.

In financials, CFG Bank advanced 0.98% to 207 dirhams, while Salafin added 0.92% to 439 dirhams.

What this means for Moroccans investing from abroad

For Moroccans living abroad who hold brokerage accounts in Morocco, this session is a reminder of the need to monitor the this case regularly. Sector volatility is significant, with wide gaps between mining, holdings and consumer-related stocks.

Before planning a return, repatriating savings or increasing exposure to Moroccan equities, it may be useful to:

  • review portfolio diversification between large and mid/small caps,
  • check exposure to the most volatile sectors,
  • discuss strategy with a bank or advisor in Morocco.

One trading day does not define a long-term trend, but it does illustrate how quickly sector rotations can occur and why active monitoring matters for overseas investors.
