Casablanca Stock Exchange edges higher after sharp drop

The Casablanca Stock Exchange opened slightly higher on Wednesday, a move closely monitored by Moroccans abroad who keep part of their savings invested back home.

Casablanca Stock Exchange shows a technical rebound

At the opening bell, the benchmark MASI index gained 0.13 %, reaching 18,214.69 points. This comes after a sharp 1.14 % decline recorded on Tuesday.

For Moroccans living abroad already exposed to Moroccan equities, this rebound from the Casablanca Stock Exchange remains modest. It does, however, suggest that the market is digesting the previous session’s correction without signs of panic.

The MASI 20 index, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks, slipped by 0.15 % to 1,317.52 points. The MASI ESG index, focused on companies with the best environmental, social and governance scores, advanced by 0.31 % to 1,349.39 points.

Winners and losers on the Casablanca market

The opening session highlighted several strong performers. IB Maroc.com led the gains, surging 8.66 % to 60.97 MAD.

Other stocks also posted notable increases:

  • Delta Holding: +2.81 % at 52.96 MAD
  • CMGP Group: +2.48 % at 310 MAD
  • SGTM: +2.14 % at 615 MAD
  • Taqa Morocco: +2.03 % at 1,760 MAD

On the downside, several stocks saw profit-taking. BMCI dropped 1.69 % to 580 MAD, while HPS lost 1.23 % to 640 MAD.

Douja Prom Addoha declined 1.19 % to 33.98 MAD, CDM fell 1.18 % to 986.2 MAD, and Résidences Dar Saada slipped 1.16 % to 170 MAD.

What this means for Moroccans investing from abroad

For Moroccans abroad investing through brokerage accounts in Morocco, Wednesday’s move is a cautious signal. The Casablanca Stock Exchange shows some resilience, but indicators remain mixed across indices and sectors.

This kind of session is a reminder of a few useful habits before planning a return, transferring savings or entering the equity market from abroad:

  • track the MASI trend over several weeks, not just one trading day;
  • check with your bank in Morocco the fees on stock market orders and international transfers;
  • adjust the share of equities to your time horizon for a return, a property purchase or a business project;
  • consider diversification between large caps and smaller companies, depending on your risk profile.

Specialised indices such as MASI ESG or MASI Mid and Small Cap may also appeal to Moroccans abroad who want exposure to responsible companies or to smaller, growing businesses.

In all cases, seeking professional advice remains important before allocating a significant portion of overseas savings to the Moroccan market, especially in a context of volatility and contrasting sessions such as those recently seen in Casablanca.
