Chourouk Hriech: Casablanca at the Heart of Her Drawings

With her black ink and dense, intricate landscapes, Chourouk Hriech transforms cities into imaginary territories. On 11 October 2026, the French-Moroccan artist was a guest on La Grande Galerie francophone on TV5MONDE. Alongside Philippe Katerine, she presented a visual universe where architecture, nature and urban memory meet. Casablanca holds a special place in this universe. Another highlight awaits the artist: her exhibition “Le Chant des seuils”, scheduled at the Paul-Valéry Museum in Sète from 6 December 2026 to 18 April 2027.

Chourouk Hriech, an artist who redraws the city

Drawing lies at the heart of Chourouk Hriech’s practice. The artist often uses Chinese ink to compose highly detailed urban landscapes.

Her works explore architecture, perspectives and the relationships between different spaces. Buildings stand alongside vegetation. Lines intersect and scales shift.

This approach gives rise to cities that resemble both real places and inner landscapes.

On the set of La Grande Galerie francophone, hosted by Ali Baddou, several of her works helped the audience understand this approach. The programme devoted around ten minutes to her work.

Casablanca, a world city in her imagination

Casablanca occupies an important place in Chourouk Hriech’s artistic universe.

The artist does not try to reproduce a postcard version of the metropolis. She is more interested in its architecture, its transformations and the diversity of the spaces that make it up.

The city becomes a territory in motion. Facades, streets and buildings tell different stories depending on the gaze cast upon them.

This vision echoes the notion of a “world city” mentioned during her appearance on TV5MONDE. Casablanca thus appears as a space shaped by migration, encounters and successive transformations.

For the artist, drawing a city is therefore not just about reproducing its buildings. It also means capturing its atmospheres and multiple identities.

When humans disappear, nature steps in

In many of her drawings, human figures vanish. The architecture remains, but vegetation and birds take centre stage.

This living presence changes the way we perceive the landscapes. Buildings sometimes seem to have been reclaimed by nature. Plant elements merge with constructions and transform familiar spaces.

The result shifts between observation of reality and imagination. The artist composes environments in which architecture is no longer the sole focus of attention.

Nature becomes an essential component of her landscapes. It accompanies the lines, changes perspectives and opens up new ways of reading the image.

From paper to monumental spaces

Chourouk Hriech’s work is not confined to sheets of paper.

Over the course of her career, the artist has developed projects that push drawing beyond its usual frame. Her compositions can occupy large surfaces and engage directly with architecture.

This exploration of scale allows the public to experience her works differently. Drawing becomes a spatial experience rather than simply an image to look at.

The artist thus probes the connections between line, place and the viewer’s gaze. Her compositions invite us to look differently at the spaces we pass through every day.

“Le Chant des seuils”, a major exhibition in Sète

From 6 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, Chourouk Hriech will take over the temporary exhibition spaces of the Paul-Valéry Museum in Sète.

Entitled “Le Chant des seuils”, this exhibition will span nearly 1,000 square metres. It will bring together new works and extend the artist’s research into drawing, territories and the visitor’s experience.

The project is designed as an immersive journey. The museum presents the exhibition as a crossing of images, stories and territories.

Here, drawing will step beyond the sheet of paper to enter into dialogue with the space itself. Visitors will be able to discover the works in an environment conceived around this artistic approach.

Artistic news that crosses borders

The Sète exhibition is part of a wider artistic calendar for Chourouk Hriech.

The artist is also presenting “Faire non-frontière” at PARCC in Labenne from 19 September 2026 to 3 January 2027. She is participating in the contemporary art trail “Les Étincelantes” at the Parc des Oiseaux until 11 November 2026.

These projects highlight the diversity of contexts in which she develops her work. Her drawings can converse with museum spaces, cultural venues or natural environments.

Her appearance on TV5MONDE offers another opportunity to discover a distinctive artistic approach. It also shines a light on a French-Moroccan artist whose imagination gives a special place to cities and their transformations.

Through her black lines, Chourouk Hriech ultimately invites us to look differently at familiar places. Casablanca in particular becomes, under her hand, far more than a backdrop: a territory of memory, movement and imagination.
