M&A in Morocco: what the new consolidation wave means for investors

This update focuses on Morocco M&A consolidation. Morocco’s latest position on the African mergers and acquisitions map confirms its role as a stable hub, even if it still weighs less than the continent’s mega-deals.

Morocco M&A consolidation driven by two key deals

In its 2026 African overview, Boston Consulting Group highlights the continued consolidation of Moroccan financial services. The report points to two completed transactions with a combined value of around 427 million US dollars.

The first is the acquisition of Allianz Maroc by Sanlam Maroc, for approximately 277 million dollars. According to the firm, this transaction extends an existing wave of mergers and acquisitions in Morocco’s life insurance segment.

The second deal is the purchase by the Ayrad group of Luxembourg-based investment advisory firm Osead Fund, for around 150 million dollars. Osead Fund holds a significant minority stake in Compagnie Minière de Touissit, a Moroccan mining company.

Together, these transactions show a clear trend: the gradual consolidation of stronger players in finance and mining, two pillars of the national economy.

An African market dominated by a handful of mega-deals

At the scale of the continent, however, the two Moroccan transactions remain modest. They account for less than 4% of the 11.6 billion dollars in mergers and acquisitions involving African targets or buyers as of the end of July.

According to the report, the total value of deals rose by 19% year-on-year, while the number of transactions fell by 32%, from 294 to 200. The market is therefore concentrating around larger tickets.

Only three transactions worth at least 500 million dollars were announced during the period, compared with nine in each of the previous two full years. Yet their combined value, around 8.7 billion dollars, represents roughly 75% of the total. The remaining 197 deals, including the two Moroccan ones, add up to only about 2.9 billion dollars.

For Boston Consulting Group, this pattern reflects an African M&A market still in the making. It has not yet reached the depth or critical mass of more established financial centers, but it follows the global trend of value concentrating in a few emblematic files.

What this means for Moroccans living abroad

For Moroccans living abroad and tracking opportunities at home, this new phase of Morocco M&A consolidation sends several signals.

  • Greater solidity among insurance and financial-service providers, relevant for anyone planning a return or relocation to Morocco.
  • A mining sector that is gradually structured around better-capitalized investors.
  • A business environment where the biggest moves are increasingly long-term and strategic.

For a Moroccan abroad opening accounts, choosing insurance products or investing in financial instruments from overseas, consolidation can mean more integrated offers and stronger institutional counterparts. Over time, it could also support the emergence of products better tailored to international profiles.

In mining, the arrival or reinforcement of structured investors may help secure projects, improve governance and clarify risk exposure for individuals who follow the Casablanca Stock Exchange.

This shift does not radically change the day-to-day procedures of the diaspora, but it confirms one message: Morocco is anchoring itself in Africa’s M&A dynamics by gradually consolidating its sectoral champions.

A market to watch over the long term

The snapshot provided by Boston Consulting Group is still partial. The figures cover deals announced or completed up to the end of July, and some significant operations are still pending completion.

For Moroccans abroad considering investment projects, the key is to track, over time, how major financial players and strategic sectors such as mining, energy and infrastructure evolve.

In parallel, it remains important to cross-check these market insights with information available on official portals and dedicated schemes for Moroccans living abroad, in order to fine-tune decisions on return plans, savings or business creation in Morocco.
