Morocco Seen as Possible Recipient of US KC-10 Tanker Aircraft

The United States is considering returning up to four KC-10 Extender tanker aircraft to service in order to transfer them to a North African partner country. Morocco is among the possible recipients, alongside Egypt. However, Washington has not officially identified the destination country.

The US Air Force published a market notice on 7 October 2026 seeking companies capable of restoring these aircraft, which were withdrawn from service in 2024, and preparing them for renewed operational use.

Up to four KC-10 tankers to be returned to service

The project concerns a maximum of four KC-10 Extender aircraft, which are primarily used for aerial refueling of military planes.

According to the US document, interested companies must be able to restore the aircraft to airworthy condition, obtain the necessary certifications and authorizations, and organize their transfer to the recipient country.

The program also includes on-site logistical support as well as training for aircrews and maintenance technicians.

The aim is to restore operational capability to existing aircraft. The transfer would take place under the US Excess Defense Articles program, which governs the transfer of surplus military equipment to partner nations.

At this stage, this is not yet a firm contract for work. The notice is primarily intended to identify companies with the required expertise.

Morocco and Egypt among the countries considered

The official notice mentions only a North African partner country and does not name Morocco or Egypt.

These two countries are nevertheless highlighted in analysis by specialized defense media covering the project. Both operate F-16 fighter jets, which makes the potential transfer of KC-10 tankers technically relevant.

For Morocco, such a capability could prove valuable for long-range and long-duration air operations. Aerial refueling increases the endurance of fighter aircraft and reduces the need to return to base to refuel.

However, this operational interest alone is not enough to confirm that Rabat will receive the aircraft. So far, no official announcement cited in the US notice identifies Morocco as the beneficiary.

What do we know about the timetable?

The US Air Force notice calls on interested companies to present their technical capabilities. The deadline for responses indicated in the document is 28 October 2026.

This stage should allow US authorities to assess available options before taking further decisions. The document does not set any delivery date and does not confirm that the reactivation of the four aircraft will actually go ahead.

The schedule will therefore depend on decisions taken after this consultation. The cost of refurbishment and the final arrangements for the transfer also remain to be defined.

A potential boost for Moroccan Air Force capabilities

If Morocco is ultimately selected, the arrival of KC-10 tankers would mark a significant step up in its aerial refueling capabilities.

The aircraft would be able to support missions flown by Moroccan fighter jets compatible with their refueling systems. Their use would, however, require extensive refurbishment, training of flight and ground crews, and an adapted support structure to ensure long-term maintenance.

For now, the file remains at a preparatory stage. Morocco is one of the possible beneficiaries mentioned by observers, but the United States has not confirmed its choice. The next step will be to determine whether the project moves forward and which country ultimately receives the aircraft.
