Nawal El Moutawakel has joined the leadership of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSA). The former Moroccan Olympic champion has been appointed vice‑president in charge of Africa and Latin America for the 2026–2029 term.
The appointment was announced at the organisation’s 15th General Assembly, held in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal was also confirmed as the federation’s president.
Nawal El Moutawakel ISSA: a new international role
With this appointment, Nawal El Moutawakel ISSA takes on a new leadership role within an organisation that brings together the National Olympic Committees of the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
She will be responsible, among other duties, for supporting and developing sporting activities across the regions under her remit.
Her mandate will cover the period 2026–2029.
A career marked by Olympic history
Nawal El Moutawakel has extensive experience in international sport.
In 1984, in Los Angeles, she became the first Arab and Muslim woman to win an Olympic gold medal, after her victory in the 400 metres hurdles.
That achievement is a milestone in both Moroccan and Olympic history.
After retiring from competition, she held several positions in international sports institutions, including serving on the International Olympic Committee.
Her experience will be an asset for her new mandate at ISSA.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal reconfirmed
The 15th General Assembly also confirmed Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal as president of ISSA.
The federation renewed its leadership team for the 2026–2029 period.
Kazakh former world boxing champion Gennadiy Golovkin also joined the leadership as a vice‑president.
This new team brings together figures from diverse backgrounds within the international sports movement.
Broader geographic representation
The new governance aims to ensure representation for the different regions covered by the organisation.
Officials from North Africa, sub‑Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia are among those participating in the new leadership team.
