Moroccan tourism hits record 2 million visitors in August 2026

Morocco’s tourism industry has set a new historic record. For the first time, the Kingdom welcomed more than 2 million tourists in the single month of August 2026. By the end of August, Morocco had recorded a total of 14.1 million tourist arrivals, an increase of 4.5% year-on-year, representing nearly 608,000 additional visitors.

Moroccan tourism: August surpasses 2 million visitors for the first time

August 2026 will stand as a new benchmark for Moroccan tourism.

The Kingdom registered more than 2 million tourist arrivals in just one month, a level that marks a 3% increase compared with August 2025.

This strong performance comes after an already dynamic first half of the year. By the end of August, total arrivals reached 14.1 million. Year-on-year growth stands at 4.5%, with nearly 608,000 more visitors than in the same period of 2025.

Tourist numbers keep rising

These results confirm the positive momentum in the sector. Morocco continues to attract visitors thanks to the diversity of its tourism offering.

Cultural tourism, beach holidays, gastronomy, nature tourism and city breaks together make up an offer that appeals to a wide range of traveller profiles.

The summer season also benefits from the return of Moroccans living abroad, who make a major contribution to tourism activity during the summer months.

Growth is therefore not driven solely by international visitors. It is part of a broader summer travel dynamic, supported by several categories of travellers.

The 2023–2026 Roadmap at the heart of the strategy

The Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, attributes this momentum to the guidelines set out in the 2023–2026 Roadmap.

This strategy aims to act on several levers within the sector. It seeks in particular to strengthen the country’s attractiveness as a destination, improve the visitor experience and increase the economic impact of tourism.

According to the minister, the sector still has significant potential. The next phase should therefore focus on spreading the benefits of this growth to more regions and to more tourism professionals.

Benefits that go beyond major destinations

The rise in visitor numbers is boosting a much wider ecosystem than hotels alone.

Restaurants, cafés, craftspeople, guides, travel agencies, shops and leisure activities also benefit from the increased flow of tourists.

The key challenge now is to better distribute this activity across the whole country. The ministry therefore aims to strengthen the impact of Moroccan tourism in different regions of the Kingdom.

This diversification is a major economic issue. It can help lesser-known destinations expand their offer and attract new visitors.

Morocco looks to a new phase after 2026

The record set in August comes just a few months before the end of the 2023–2026 Roadmap.

With 14.1 million arrivals in eight months, Morocco has already built a solid base to sustain further tourism growth.

The next phase will, however, have to address a new challenge: supporting higher visitor numbers without compromising the quality of the experience.

Infrastructure, accommodation capacity, transport and tourism services will all have to keep pace.

The record of 2 million visitors in August shows that Moroccan tourism continues to enjoy strong appeal. The challenge now is to turn this record attendance into sustainable growth that is more evenly shared between regions and across the tourism value chain.
