Casablanca Stock Exchange slips as MASI falls 0.46%

The Casablanca Stock Exchange ended Monday’s session in negative territory, with its main indices edging lower and sectors showing very different trends.

Casablanca Stock Exchange: MASI posts modest decline

The benchmark MASI index of the Casablanca Stock Exchange fell by 0.46% to 18,705.43 points, marking a modest pullback after a series of relatively calm sessions.

The MASI 20, which tracks the 20 most liquid stocks on the market, dropped 0.92% to 1,350.12 points. The MASI ESG index, focused on companies with the highest environmental, social and governance scores, was down 0.44% at 1,386.88 points.

The MASI Mid and Small Cap index, which reflects the performance of listed small and mid-cap companies, stood at 1,805.35 points.

Losers, winners and sector contrasts

At sector level, several segments dragged the market down. The sharpest declines were recorded in:

  • transport services (-1.6%);
  • forestry and paper (-1.45%);
  • insurance (-1.31%).

On the other hand, some sectors held up well and even posted solid gains. Pharmaceutical industry stocks rose 2.77%, beverages gained 2.14%, and agricultural industry shares advanced 1.91%.

Among individual names, the steepest drops hit Cartier Saada (-3.24% at 23.02 MAD), Maghrebail (-2.79% at 889.5 MAD), Microdata (-2.58% at 750 MAD), S.M Monétique (-2.42% at 525 MAD) and Rebab Company (-2.11% at 93 MAD).

In contrast, strong advances were seen on IB Maroc.com (+9.07% at 60 MAD), Mutandis SCA (+5.91% at 250 MAD), Sothema (+2.97% at 350.1 MAD), Société des Boissons du Maroc (+2.79% at 2,061 MAD) and Afriquia Gaz (+2.63% at 3,899 MAD).

Trading volumes and what it means for Moroccans abroad

Total trading exceeded 176.57 million dirhams, mainly on the central market. Activity was dominated by Managem (36.38 million MAD), Label Vie (25.97 million MAD) and Itissalat Al-Maghrib, better known internationally as Maroc Telecom (19.84 million MAD).

Overall market capitalisation on the Casablanca Stock Exchange reached more than 1,098.69 billion dirhams, underlining its role as a key channel for financing major Moroccan companies.

For Moroccans living abroad who already hold Moroccan shares, this session is a reminder that it is essential to monitor the MASI and MASI 20 indices regularly. The decline is limited, but the gap between sectors shows how stock selection can significantly affect portfolio performance.

For those thinking about a gradual return to Morocco or about diversifying their savings into the Kingdom, this market move is not, by itself, a warning signal. It does highlight, however, the need to:

  • compare sector cycles before increasing exposure;
  • check the liquidity of stocks you plan to buy or sell;
  • look carefully at fees and tax rules that apply to non-residents.

Moroccans abroad wishing to deepen their strategy can talk to their financial intermediaries in Morocco or consult official market data to refine their choices. In every case, keeping an eye on the daily indicators of the this case remains a useful way to manage, from abroad, part of their assets invested back home.
