Morocco’s rail network is now one of the most modern in Africa. It has continued to evolve and modernise in order to offer passengers the greatest possible comfort. As for the stations, refurbishment work is continuing, with the aim of transforming them into genuine multi-service centres, even attracting customers who simply come to do some shopping or have a coffee…

The development of trains and rail lines is following the same trend. Since the launch of Al Boraq in 2018, Morocco has even had Africa’s first high-speed rail line.

Main train categories

• Al Boraq

This train, which has been in service since 2018 on a high-speed line (320 km/h), reduces journey times and offers ‘top-of-the-range’ comfort and services.

Al Boraq connects Casablanca to Tangier in just 2 hours and 10 minutes, Rabat to Tangier in 1 hour and 20 minutes, and Kenitra to Tangier in 50 minutes. It also serves several other towns and cities across the Kingdom via connecting services (by regular trains or coaches):

• In Kenitra: via scheduled trains to and from Meknes, Fez, Taza, Oujda and Nador.
• To Casablanca Voyageurs: via scheduled trains to and from Marrakesh, Berrechid, Settat, El Jadida…
• In Marrakesh: via Supratours coaches to and from the south.
• In Tangier: by Supratours coaches to and from Tetouan and Martil.

• Express Shuttle Trains

These are high-capacity shuttle buses that enable frequent services (one departure every 30 minutes from 6.00 am to 9.30 pm).

With Casa Port station serving as a hub for regional services, the TNR network now connects Salé and Kenitra to the north, El Jadida to the south, and Mohammed V Airport and Settat to the east.

• Long-distance trains

Comfortable trains linking dozens of towns and cities across the national rail network, enabling a return journey to be made in a single day, either directly or via quick connections.

The routes cover: Tangier–Fez–Oujda, Fez–Marrakech, Casablanca–Khouribga–Oued Zem, Benguerir–Safi, Casablanca–Nador, Casablanca–Fez and Casablanca–Fez–Oujda.

In addition, the ONCF offers a ‘rail-road’ service using ‘Supratours’ coaches, which provide access to towns not yet connected by rail (Tetouan, Agadir, Essaouira, Laâyoune, etc.).

Ticket sales channels

At stations: alongside the traditional ticket sales at station counters, the ONCF has installed ticket machines in more than 30 of the busiest stations. These machines accept coins, banknotes and debit cards, both national and international. When you make a purchase, they will issue you with a receipt.

Online: You can buy your tickets securely online via the ONCF’s e-commerce site (www.oncf-voyages.ma). The e-ticket can be printed or simply downloaded onto a smartphone or tablet. In this case, there is no need to validate it at the station; the ticket inspectors on board will take care of this.

Travel booking

To book a journey, you must purchase your ticket in advance to ensure you have a seat in 1st or 2nd class. On some trains, this is compulsory.

Under the new pricing system, ticket prices rise gradually as the train’s departure date approaches. Consequently, the earlier you book, the better the price. These prices vary depending on the train, the day and time of travel, as well as the date the ticket is purchased and the after-sales conditions selected.

Validity of tickets

Under the new fare structure, each ticket is valid for a specific train, on a specific day and at a specific time. You must therefore take care to choose the train you actually intend to travel on when you make your purchase.

Refunds: Unused or partially used tickets may be refunded provided they have not expired. To do so, you must ensure that they are stamped at the station where your journey was interrupted. A refund application form is available at stations.

Some useful information

• Ticket sales for a train close 3 minutes before its departure. If you arrive at the station during these 3 minutes, you will not be able to buy tickets for that train, even if it is still at the platform or has not yet arrived;
• On your ticket, make a note of your train, carriage and seat numbers;
• Your ticket may be exchangeable or refundable, subject to the after-sales terms and conditions of the fare purchased;
• Access to the platform for boarding a train is available from 40 minutes before the train’s departure. It is recommended that you arrive at the station at least 15 minutes before departure if you already have your ticket. Access to the platforms closes 2 minutes before the train’s departure. If the platform doors are closed, you will not be able to board the train, even if it is still at the platform and you have your ticket.
